Starting this Fall of 2021, RunDisney returns to in person running! After over a year of virtual races, we are thrilled to return to Walt Disney World for four upcoming race weekends! There are a few minor changes to note as well, but we have combed through the information for you!
Changes for 2021-2022 RunDisney
First, we should note that we do not know if there are any capacity restrictions on the races, as this data is not made public by RunDisney ahead of time. We do know that there is no longer early registration for Annual Passholders or Disney Vacation Club members. Previously, AP and DVC runners were able to register a week or a few days early. Notably, there is early registration for the newly added Club RunDisney Gold and Platinum level runners.
Another major change causing some concern is the Proof of Time change. To clarify, everyone can enter in a RunDisney race, you do not NEED a proof of time to enter! The qualifying time is only to be placed in certain corrals. This year, the cut off time is now a 2 hour Half Marathon time. Based on previous numbers, this will only impact the runners in Corral A and B. This is frustrating, because it means roughly 95% of runners will be self seeded into the remaining corrals. This causes concern for people who may self place themselves in an incorrect corral, which will cause traffic and clustering on the course.
2021 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend
November 4-7, 2021
Our first race weekend back in person is the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. Historically, this race is the first weekend in November and this year will be no different. The Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend boasts a Friday 5K, Saturday 10K, and Sunday Half Marathon. All of these races take place in the morning hours (very early morning hours!). The only major difference for 2021 is that there is a virtual race option for every distance as well. This is great if you want to complete those miles at home!
The unique feature of the Wine and Dine Half Marathon is the Post Race party in EPCOT the evening after the Half Marathon. Fortunately, it is back for 2021! Half Marathon and Challenge runners receive included admission to the party, but extra tickets can be purchased for guests as well. Half Marathon and Challenge runners also receive a $15 gift card to use at the party as well!
2022 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend
January 5-9, 2022
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the only race weekend to feature a full Marathon distance, or 26.2 miles. This weekend features a Thursday 5K, Friday 10K, Saturday Half Marathon, and Sunday Marathon. Some runners elect to complete all four races as part of the Dopey Challenge! Fortunately, this all remains the same for the 2022 race weekend. Like Wine and Dine Weekend, this race weekend will also feature a virtual option for every race distance.
2022 Princess Half Marathon Weekend
February 24-27, 2022
One of the most popular weekends is the Princess Half Marathon Weekend! After a year of virtual races, we expect this race weekend specifically to sell out very quickly. It historically has some of the best costumed runners! Fortunately, there is still a virtual option for every race distance at this weekend as well in case runners are unable to get in for the in person experience.
New this year is a Disney Princess Sunrise Yoga! This experience will be held in front of the castle at Magic Kingdom! To say we are excited is an understatement, this is a must for us! The only downside to this additional experience, is another early morning wake up call.
2022 RunDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend
March 31 – April 3, 2022
Replacing the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend is the mysterious Springtime Surprise Weekend! We don’t have much information about this weekend just yet, aside from some placeholder dates. Supposedly, the race theme (and potentially distances) will change annually. This is in an attempt to keep things fresh for the annually returning runners.
We are sad about the loss of Star Wars Weekend since we were “perfect runners”. That means we completed every race since the first Dark Side Half Marathon. It was also Katie’s very first half marathon ever! Hopefully, this new weekend will fill that void well!
RunDisney returns to in-person racing, and we are ready to return to RunDisney! If you have any other questions about RunDisney, feel free to contact us. We also have a LARGE number of blogs already on the various race weekends past.
